Enjoy the finer things in life AND enjoy the unique flavor of New Mexico on a Bread, Wine and Chocolate excursion in and near Santa Fe! Begin the day at a lovely Santa Fe café called Sweet Water Harvest Cafe that specializes in fresh, sustainably sourced, and downright delicious food.  Menu items include various forms of coffee, tea, chai and hot cacao to start.  Then dig into Lemon Ricotta Spelt Pancakes, Buckwheat Banana Pancakes, Baked Eggs with Crème Fraiche & Herbs, or one of many other delectable items. Next, you can walk off breakfast in and around historic and rustic Santa Fe Plaza.  Here you’ll have a chance to soak in the adobe ambiance of Santa Fe and peruse the handmade crafts presented by Native American artists in front of the Palace of the Governors.  Todos Santos Chocolates and Confections and Senor Murphy Chocolates  are within a block of the Plaza.  You can also peruse the many shops that are tucked away in the nooks and crannies of old adobe buildings that were built hundreds of years ago by settlers in the Spanish colony of Nuevo Mejico. Jump in your car and visit these more renouned chocolatiers that are recommended on the Santa Fe Chocolate Trail. Take a lunch break in Santa Fe and escape New Mexico to France at a delightful, hole-in-the-wall French café, Clafoutis French Bakery & Restaurant.  Start with a bowl (yes, bowl) of coffee and proceed to the crepes, quiche, sandwiches and salads that have made this place a Santa Fe must.  Or share a Country Market Basket for 2 and enjoy baguette, cheese, butter, pate, ham, mustard, salad and dessert.   If you can, leave room for an éclair or some other decadent French pastry. Take a well deserved rest from eating as you drive through the rugged countryside to one of northern New Mexico’s many wineries, La Estrella del Norte Vineyard.  65 different wines from four of New Mexico’s finest vineyards will be available for sale.  Enjoy a tasting of six local wines.  Bring home a bottle of “Holy Mole,” a chili/chocolate flavored wine! At La Estrella del Norte, you are already on Highway 503 in the town of Nambe.  After imbibing responsibly, continue east on 503 and stop for a picture of the dramatic church in Nambe, El Sagrado Corazone de Jesus.  Then procede approximately 5 miles further on 503 and follow the signs to the left that direct you through a vast expanse of amazing scenery to the Santuario de Chimayo. The lovely and historical Santuario de Chimayo Shrine and its  grounds are the most visited pilgrimage sites in the United States.  The historic architecture and folk art decorations make this a truly special place to visit.  Built in 1816, the Santuario is a National Historic Landmark. If you still have room, treat yourself to dinner in Santa Fe at an Maria’s Kitchen.  Be prepared to answer the uniquely New Mexican question, “Red or Green” regarding your chili sauce preference.  Or be adventuresome and answer “Christmas” for the full chili experience!  People who believe that discretion is the better part of valor will ask for their chili sauce “on the side” and dole it out to meet their heat tolerance level!
